How to price drywall hanging and finishing

Last reviewed 2026-10-20. Estimates, not legal or tax advice.

Hang and finish are two prices. Sheets and screws sit on the hang. Tape, compound, and sanding time sit on the finish. Your rate goes on the hours, not inside the sheet price.

Steps

  1. Count sheets from the area, the same way as a material takeoff.
  2. Price hanging labor by the hour or by the sheet, and say which.
  3. Price finishing labor by the level of finish you will actually leave.
  4. Keep the trip charge outside both lines.
  5. If the customer only wants hanging, remove the finish line. Do not discount the whole job by a guess.

Same 12 by 10 room, two lines

A 12 by 10 foot room with 8 foot walls and one 3 by 6.8 foot door is 331.6 square feet of wall.

Add 10% for cuts and waste and you need 12 sheets of 4 by 8.

Hang line: the sheets, the screws, and the hours to hang them.

Finish line: the tape, the compound, and the hours to tape, coat, and sand.
