How to price a drywall patch

Last reviewed 2026-10-20. Estimates, not legal or tax advice.

Measure the hole, count one sheet if the patch is smaller than a 4 by 8, then price the trip and the finish time on their own lines. A patch is mostly labor.

Steps

  1. Measure the damaged area and the access around it.
  2. Count sheets from the area, not from a room formula, and add tape and compound.
  3. Put the drive and the minimum visit on a trip line.
  4. Price finish time separately from hanging time.
  5. Offer a paint-ready option only if you will actually paint it.

A 2 by 2 foot patch

A 2 by 2 foot patch is 4 square feet. One 4 by 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, so the material line is still one sheet plus tape and compound.

The visit is the larger cost. If the drive is 30 minutes and the patch takes an hour, price those hours at your rate and keep the sheet price visible.

This is a worked method. It is not a price from other contractors.
