Add the wall area, subtract openings, then divide by 32 square feet for a 4 by 8 sheet and add waste. Count screws, tape, and compound from that same area.

Steps

  1. Measure length, width, and wall height.
  2. Subtract doors and windows.
  3. Add the ceiling only if you are boarding it.
  4. Divide by the sheet size and round up.
  5. Add about 10% for cuts before you buy.

A 12 by 10 foot room

A 12 by 10 foot room with 8 foot walls and one 3 by 6.8 foot door is 331.6 square feet of wall.

Add 10% for cuts and waste and you need 12 sheets of 4 by 8.

The same area is about 332 screws, 123 feet of tape, and 46 pounds of joint compound.

Put your own sheet price and your hourly rate on those lines. This example is a method, not a market price.
